Frequently Asked Questions.

It's normal to have questions! Check out the answers to the most commonly asked questions below. Call, text or email if you'd like more information.

Most people do not realize their full potential. Instead, they plod along day-to-day hoping luck or some other mysterious power can change their lives. What they don’t realize is the power to change is already within them, just waiting to help them accomplish everything they wish for. Seem crazy? It’s not. It’s scientifically proven!

The secret starts with self-awareness and is completed by auto-suggestion. Hypnosis, self-hypnosis and Yoga Nidra are self-awareness expansion techniques that help you overcome the programming of your past allowing you to move forward towards success, better health and true happiness.

Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis

1. What is hypnotism?

Hypnotism is a natural state of mind (often referred to as a trance state) where the critical mind is relaxed and relatively inactive, and the doorway to the subconscious, inner mind is opened with a person’s permission. It’s a state in between being awake and being asleep, a state you’ve been in many times before, perhaps without even knowing (i.e., daydreaming, forgetting those last few miles while driving, zoning out while watching TV, etc.).

2. What is the subconscious mind?

The conscious mind (the mind you are conscious of) is the critical part of your mind and represents just 15-20% of who you are. The subconscious mind is the part that runs your body (breathing, heartbeat, etc.) and directs your conduct through habits and emotional desires you have acquired throughout your life – mostly before you were even old enough to accept or reject ideas and concepts. Through proper use of suggestion during the hypnotic state, you can reprogram the subconscious mind to make decisions that are favorable to your welfare and aligned with your goals.

3. Is hypnosis dangerous?

No. You are in full control. There has never been a documented case of harm coming to anyone from the therapeutic use of hypnotism or of someone being unable to come out of a hypnotic state.

4. What does it feel like to be hypnotized?

Hypnosis provides a pleasant feeling of complete physical and mental relaxation just like the moments that occur as you transition from being awake to being asleep.

5. Does hypnosis weaken the will?

No. Hypnosis works with the will, not against it. In fact, the hypnotherapist has no control over you at all. You cannot be made to do anything that is against your will. Instead, hypnosis strengthens a person’s will to achieve their goals.

6. What is self-hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is when a person puts himself or herself under hypnosis. Truly though, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis since it is self-directed and self-controlled.

7. Who can be hypnotized?

Anyone with an open mind, reasonable intelligence and the ability to concentrate.

8. What is hypnosis used for?

Just about anything! Examples include fears, phobias, health issues (including pain management), smoking cessation, weight concerns (diet, eating disorders, food addictions), insomnia and other sleep issues, attitude changes (overcoming anger, negativity), improving performance (sports, public speaking) and so much more.

9. How is hypnosis done?

You can experience hypnosis in a group setting or one-on-one with a hypnotherapist. Part of the process will include techniques for self-hypnosis so you can support yourself through the change process.

10. Does hypnotherapy work?

Yes! Professional organizations have consistently reported on the value of hypnotherapy. One you’re likely familiar with is Mayo Clinic. They listed hypnosis as one of their top 10 alternative therapies in their 2011 Guide to Alternative Medicine.

Yoga Nidra

1. What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a sleep-based medication technique that's designed to unleash the healing abilities within the body by helping us disconnect from the thinking mind.

2. Sleep-based, what do you mean?

This technique mimics what we do naturally every night... sleep! During sleep, our minds progress from a waking state (Beta/Gamma brainwaves) into a dreaming state (Alpha/Theta) and then into a really deep sleep state (Theta/Delta). It's in our deepest sleep that powerful healing occurs.

Yoga Nidra takes us from the waking state into that deep Delta state easily and effortlessly. In a whole night, we get 60 or so minutes of that deep sleep where healing occurs. A Yoga Nidra session can get you 20 minutes or more in that deep state depending on the length of the session.

3. Is Yoga Nidra the same as Yoga?

Yoga Nidra is a mindfulness practice like Yoga and may start out with some basic stretches to calm the body and release excess energy. The session itself is completed lying down with the eyes closed and focuses on complete relaxation.

This means you cannot do it wrong! The hardest part is trying to stay awake. If you do happen to fall asleep, it's okay! You'll still receive benefit.

4. What are the benefits of Yoga Nidra?

From the scientific side, Yoga Nidra has been proven to calm the nervous system and increase the release of melatonin, oxytocin, endorphins, dopamine and the human growth hormone and decrease cortisol and the overall stress response (that fight/flight feeling we often experience).

What this means in simpler terms is better overall health. Less stress, fear, anxiety, better sleep, increased memory capacity, more focused, creative, calm, less reactive, depressed and reduced pain to name a few.

Overall, practicing Yoga Nidra results in a more balanced life.

5. Are Yoga Nidra and Hypnosis the same?

Although there are similarities, the two are somewhat different. Hypnosis works primarily with the right side of the brain while Yoga Nidra works with the whole brain. Hypnosis creates shifts within the body/mind and Yoga Nidra shifts from beyond the body/mind. Both are beneficial to bringing about change in your life.
